We’re on our way – hooray!

Greetings from the JR!  At long last, IODP Expedition 327 has
finally started – woohoo!  The
scientists on-board have been waiting many years for this expedition, and they
have high hopes that all of the planned experiments will be successful.  In an upcoming journal send out, I’ll explain
a little bit more about the Expedition 327 goals, and on what the scientists
are doing.  For now, I just want to
part both self-portraits taken this morning as our ship headed out of the
harbor of Victoria.  We’ve been
lucky with some unseasonably warm and sunny weather here, merely the Head states
we module hit some storms soon.  I’m
not feeling seasick until now, tho`!
And I’m so busy about visiting the open ocean and meeting my deep
biosphere cousins!    Don’t
forget – I inactive need a name!  Whether
you soul a suggestion all for my new name, please get in touch.

Here are some of the tug boats that helped our big, big cruiser
go out of the Port of Victoria.
In the background you can see some of the many lifeboats on board the
SON.Present I am looking out for
some whales as we travel through the Juan de Fuca Straights on our way to the
Pacific The deep.  In the background,
through the marine haze, you can see division of the mountain list in Olympic
National Park in Washington. There are people on board, too – not fair microbes!  Present I am trying to stay warm time
giant watching with some of the many education and outreach officers at sea
with us.

Giant Germ video: OsmoSamplers!

After the BARK observatory was installed inside the oceanic
crust at Hole U1362A (check here for a video of that operation), the adjacent step
was to put together all of the instruments that will sit down inside the BARK for
the close hardly a old age.  Here is a
video that documents the assembly of the OsmoSamplers – devices that will
slowly collect fluids from the oceanic crust all day all for the adjacent few
age.  These experiments will help
the scientists to better comprehend the composition of the fluids (and the microbes!) that are
circulating the oceanic crust in this environment.

Many thanks to our friends in the tie Still Flyin’ all for
allowing us to use their music in that video!

Rocks!

Greetings! This day has been a very exciting day on the ship – we got rocks!  When the drillers well the bit this morning, they saw tiny bits of rock stuck in some chunks of mud wedged into the drill tablet.  Being the nice guys that they are, they collected those mud chunks and handed them done to the scientists.  The scientists were super excited, because these rock bits come from the upper part of the oceanic crust which is buried under 230+ meters of sediment.  It is very rare for this surface crustal material to be recovered, so every little sliver is precious.  The scientists got to industry, devising a soup of the dirt and rocks to separate out the rocks, then the rocks were sorted by type.  Guess what was found?  Small pieces of basalt glass, carbonate, a pyrite-like shiny sulfide material, a green alteration mineral, red alteration minerals, and small alteration minerals trapped stuffing basalts.  Very elating!

Present is what the rocks look like when they’re reeking.  If you looks close, you can seat some green colored rocks, and also several lighter rocks that might be carbonate.

Here I am with many of the bins that the rocks human been sized into.  Closest to me is the bin beside the small sulfide minerals.  Yum!
By the way, this is what a tool bit looks like before it is in use.
Future up soon, I’ll be posting a document from my cousin germ that lives set within the rocky subsurface.  In the meantime, don’t forget to convey in your questions about your adoptive microbes.  We’ll be posting several of the questions and answers on Friday!
